How to do ads.

My two cents says that advertising as a craft has made a great leap backward since the glory days of Doyle Dane Bernbach and the seminal work they did for Volkswagen.

Today, imho, more and more people are responsible for commissioning and approving advertising who have no idea what makes a good ad.

In the vernacular: they wouldn't know a good ad if you wrapped a fish in one and hit them between the eyes with it.

I pasted one of my favorite ads of all time above. It's hard to read, pixelated, but that doesn't take away from the quality of the guidance it provides.

In fact, if more creatives and more clients followed its advice, I think it would be good for business all-around.
